Affiliate Marketing Poised to Be a $4.5 Billion Behemoth By 2016

Forrester estimated the affiliate marketing industry would grow to $4.5 billion by 2016. Just in time for new U.S. president by the way.

Affiliate marketing just makes good business sense for many companies since it’s a pay-for performance model that represents low risk and low overhead while providing access to local markets without having to hire full time staff.

Affiliate marketer’s are like sales people hired by a company to sell its products. You’re only paid based on performance. This makes knowing the ins and outs of affiliate marketing that more important.

FTC guidelines state you must make it clear, and disclose to potential prospects that you’re being paid a commission as an affiliate marketer. So you should have some disclosure statement on your site that easily seen and accessible.

While some affiliate marketer’s feel this is a nuisance, I think it’s a great strive forward in marketing. Why not let someone know you’re being paid? Chances are, they’ll trust you more for being honest.

Some less-than-glowing behavior by a few in the business have tarnished the industry as a whole. Yet, as companies see the power and flexibility affiliate marketing offers their business, the willing to stick with it under tighter regulations.

Think of the company you’re representing as your own, you wouldn’t want to misrepresent your own company, and you shouldn’t do it for any company whose products you are selling.

The best way to become an affiliate marketer is to promote your own knowledge about a particular industry.

For instance, if you’re promoting a real estate product, you may want to chime in through social media channels and initiate conversations on relevant topics on real estate.

You’ll be viewed as a knowledgeable resource in the industry and this will add credibility to your offers.

Another thing you’ll want to make sure is that your publisher has a mobile ready site. While affiliate marketing is poised for $4.5 billion in a couple of years, mobile commerce is expected to top $25 billion by 2017 according to the annual “State of Retailing Online” study conducted by Forrester Research.

That’s a huge chunk of change. You can tap into it if your start laying a strong foundation and find a niche that’s right for you.

But it starts with knowing the basics of affiliate marketing. The first thing you should know is what to avoid when marketing as an affiliate.
